This Wednesday's walk is led by Margaret and Curt Weil.  Curt and I are pleased to lead this Wednesday's walk which will take us back to Bair Island in Redwood City. We'll see you at the designed parking lot at 10:00 sharp.  The walk is all flat; sorry, but dogs are not welcome.

It can be breezy so please remember a jacket and hat. The temperature should be in the low 70s.

Bair Island Background:

The island has an interesting and checkered past: In the early 20th century, it was used for ranching cattle, farming and salt production. Levees were built to prevent the flow of tidal waters around the island. At one point, a massive housing development was proposed for the island (very similar to the site of last week's walk at the Arastradero Preserve). Without the support of concerned local citizens, this special habitat could have been lost.

Directions:

From Highway 101, take the Whipple Avenue exit heading east. Follow the road as it curves sharply to the right and becomes East Bayshore Road. Continue straight to a roundabout, then make a sharp left as the road becomes Bair Island Road. Just before The Villas apartment complex, turn right at the sign for the wildlife refuge and park in the lot.  Backtrack on foot across Bair Island Road to reach the trailhead.

Village Walkers, a Village Members only group, take turns leading walks in local neighborhoods or areas of interest. A longer and shorter walk are usually planned for the route to accommodate differing needs. Contact Ralph Cahn via call or text at (650) 245-0280 to be added to the Walkers email list, to receive descriptions and directions for each week's walk.
