African American Artists
Presented by the Smithsonian American Art Museum
Monday July 19 at 1 pm

The lives of African American artists lend insight into the context of their works. Learn about the diverse body of artwork created by African American artists and the historical, social, and cultural events, as well as the life experiences, that inspired their work.

An educator from the Smithsonian will show American artworks from the museum’s collection using green screen. Through inquiry-based questions and discussion, we will explore artworks together. We'll have the opportunity together to reflect upon and discuss the diversity of styles and subject matter represented in African American artists’ work. We'll also discuss the influence of African traditions, and the social and political movements of the 19th and 20th centuries on the work of African American artists.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum, the nation’s first collection of American art, is dedicated to collecting, understanding, and enjoying American art. The Museum celebrates the extraordinary creativity of artists whose works reflect the American experience and global connections.
