"West with Giraffes" by Lynda Rutledge
The Great Hurricane of 1938 on the northeastern coast. Two giraffes being brought to America for the San Diego Zoo. They survive the hurricane but must now be transported from New York to California. Something never done before. And one of the giraffes has sustained a nasty leg wound from the hurricane. A 17year old boy running from the Dust Bowl era of the Texas Panhandle. He sees the giraffes and is completely in love and must follow them to California. A young woman who only wants to be a famous photographer for Life Magazine and only wants to be with the giraffes. An old man who has lived a long hard life but is more dedicated to animals than most anyone and will see these giraffes to California come what may. What follows is a beautiful story of resilience, bravery, love, dedication, patience over 3200 miles across America. Everyone wants to view this spectacular once in a life time event as they pass through towns and cities, bringing such awe, love, and respect to these people. It also brings danger as there are individuals who want the giraffes for themselves. A fun delightful read.
