Assuming no rain the new destination for the February 1 Lite Hike will be at Monte Bello Preserve, located at 4185 Page Mill Road in Los Altos. It normally takes about 20 minutes to drive to the preserve from the Page Mill Road – I280 interchange on a twisty mountain road. Be cautious of bicycle traffic on Page Mill Road. The turn-off into the Monte Bello Parking area is to the left as you reach the open area near the top. There are restrooms in the parking area.
THE HIKE
Starting at 11:00 AM we will hike the White Oak and Canyon Trails in the Monte Bello Preserve. It will take about 2 hours to hike about 3.9 miles with 400 feet of elevation change (down then up). A preliminary hike showed the trails to be in good condition except for some muddy areas near the Stevens Creek crossing. The mud was not deep but quite slippery. Trekking poles were a very helpful aid to safely pass through the mud and are highly recommended.
Any significant rain will cancel this hike.
The hikers will meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 9:30am - with February and March meeting at 11am. Please arrive 5-10 minutes early. The hikes will take 1.5 to 2 hours to complete (3-4 miles), with hills to climb and paths that are uneven and unpaved. It will be moderately fast paced with no easy way to leave the group part-way through.
Make sure you bring water with you and have the appropriate equiment (i.e. sturdy shoes, sun protections, walking sticks if needed).
